Not sure if you Aussie fans saw this, but the Australia v. Korea game is televised today:

The 2004 Women's Diamond Ball Tournament with those two teams will be on NBA TV @ 1:30pm Eastern today (8/6/04).

Halftime:

Australia 42
Korea 26

Penny has been putting on the show. LJ has done her fair share of good, but Penny really has been the most impressive.

As I understand it, most of the tourney will be televised this weekend. It's not showing up in the guides, but there are tickers on the bottom of the channel with some details. Stay tuned for more action!

ok i'm showing my naivety here, but i did not realise that the Australia women's team still wore those spandex/unitard, i'm not trying to be funny, i seriously have no idea what to call them :?

i thought those things would have definitely been shot down by now.
what is going on?
do the girls really like to play in them? i know they probably don't have a say in what they wear and it's the national team/olympics and i would play in the damn thing too if that was my ticket to Athens (or wherever), but I just am shocked they still use them.

my initial thought is that they are degrading to women, but before I make an opinion I thought I would ask around and see what exactly is going on with those things!
i'm open to all thoughts and opinions and/or news articles here!

i really need another opinion on this. i know Brasil wears them as well.

Not having played basketball myself, I can only guess. I look at the big & baggy shorts men & women wear now & wonder.... "How can they run with the shorts crotch down around their knees? I'm also amazed at how different (better) they look when I see them in street clothes
Spandex?..... I think it would be more comfortable though possibly warmer. Which reminds me; retaining the heat to keep muscles warm may be the objective. And then there's the fact that I enjoy looking with admiration at a strong athletic body female or male. I don't consider it leering, sexist or distasteful.

Those are my thoughts on the matter

Maybe it's lycra or that trademarked "cool max" material. I don't care for the "look" myself. With all the other teams (except as you say Brazil) wearing the baggies they stand out and look old-fashioned. I noticed after the championship game Lauren Jackson had her spandex-o unsnapped on one shoulder so she must have been hot. I would think they would be too warm on the upper body. The baggies women look like they have a jog bra on underneath and you see a lot of WNBA women folding over their tops above the arms, like they are too hot in the baggies. In the WNBA you can see them wearing compression shorts under the baggie bottoms. I would think as professional athletes, they might prefer to wear baggies so spectators look at their sport and not their body. When you see these women in street clothes you realize how thin they really are, not too mention hot in a good way!

The players who wear the tight uniforms also unhook their uniforms because it has been said that they are very tight, and very restrictive.

I still like the baggy look better. It just suits basketball.

More discussion on the Aussie bodysuits:

Having Timmsy's 2000 Olympic uni (bodysuit) framed on my office wall makes me a slight bit partial to liking them.

They are very hard to put on.

Some like them, many don't. "Degrading to women"? Well I wouldn't object if the men started wearing them - just like in athletics and swimming.

OK kids....... I just watched a special about the 1st Olympics on the Discovery channel. Keeping with tradition, I think our teams should wear what the 1st olympians wore. Which BTW is the maximum in comfort. NOTHING at all. They were bare assed naked!

I would have to disagree, as it could put the well-endowed men at a painful disadvantage during the hurles events

HAR HAR HAR --- HAW HAW HAW --- HEE HEE HEE

Picturing those men's expressions when presented with hurdles gives me a good belly laugh (the best kind) I know... I can be sadistic.

+ a case of the giggles
