This is probably a men's team, but I find it interesting all the same.
Here in the States it's more likely that a fan will have a gun & use it on a ref.
We wonder why we have to have metal detecters? This world is going to hell in a handbasket
........... ONE WAY TO STOP AN ARGUMENT???
Quote: Soccer referee wanted for shooting coach, players
Associated Press
Jul. 26, 2004 12:00 AM
KENTON-ON-SEA, South Africa - Police were searching Monday for a referee accused of fatally shooting a coach on the field in a dispute during a weekend soccer game.
Two players from the visiting Marcelle team were injured during the attack Saturday in the Eastern Cape coastal town of Kenton-on-Sea, police spokeswoman Mali Govender said. She declined to identify the suspect or the victims.
"The referee awarded a penalty against the visiting team during a friendly match and then players stormed the field," Govender said. "It looks as if the referee had the firearm on his person and fired at the players first before hitting the coach in the chest."
The coach from Ekuphumuleni died at the scene, she said. The referee fled.
One player was treated at the scene and a second was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound in the hand. He was listed in stable condition Monday. |

i read about that article. absolutely insane.
on a side note... the US women played China yesterday and won 3-1. an extremely physical match as both sides were obviously taking this game very seriously as compared to the last couple US friendlies.
i was impressed and looking forward to the oly's! |

I saw that story too. Well, at least you can tell the fans are awake and paying attention.
I was glad to see 15k+ come out on Sunday. It was a good effort. I was glad to see Wagner remind the world she can actually score as well as make plays.
Someone *else* voted to keep April? *Two* people? 6-2 in Florida is close enough to let her keep her job. |

Hey, A! :)
I don't know anything about April's personal life. I see yet a third has joined the fray. Sooner or later, she'll run out of family. :) In a way, it's okay if she stays now she seems to have finally settled on the starting lineup she should have had (in our opinion) all along, with maybe one exception.
The web stuff is up and running already on my humble, slow server here. We've got a few bugs to iron out with PHP 5, but so far, so good. We're going to do the Olympic Bball as well, so we'll upload it to Gia the night before the Olympics start, i.e., it should be completely debugged before we upload it. *crosses fingers*
It sort of looks like a mixed bag, this Olympics. The US Men's BBall seems to stink by any measure, the Canadian Women's Soccer team didn't even *qualify*, the most interesting US Team might just be the Women's Volleyball who's finally getting close to #1 in the world behind Logan Tom. I guess the thing that I worry about is that sports might not be the #1 story at the Olympics yet *again* ... :(
Lilah's going to the All Star Game tonight, and as she didn't even ask me to go and she's just 50 miles down the road, no Christmas card for you, Lilah, you selfish beeeyatch groupie .... |

:?
well, i think the US women's chances are the best from my limited knowledge so far. the oly's will be interesting to say the least!
less than a week til the US opens with Greece! |

Sorry, I guess I got carried away there - way too much caffiene the last month!
The website is for Basketball and Soccer only. We haven't figured out yet how to make a meaningful graphics display for volleyball, but that can wait for a while. Andy & I aren't any good at VB, but Logan Tom's got that whole Angelina Jolie thing going on, so it can't be all bad, right?
Basically what we do is we build the website on my computer here, debug it, and ftp it onto Gia when it's done. That way, there's no "Under Construction" bs and *poof* it's just there. All the beta testing is done online here.
The posting board section is *exactly* the same one Gia uses, the open source PHPBB, but we made the registration different, i.e., it's not public, because it would be rather nasty of us to have a board which competed with GotNext on the same server. It's more for people interested in the idea of analyzing sports in real-time than a fan board anyway, but ya never know, so some of your pals in Chicago will probably come in, for example, and a few soccer & basketball coaches we know are interested. When I head back home in the fall, we can invite some of the UVA people to take a look. Right now they don't know who I am from Adam. It'll take a while to get going, we think.
Anyway, email me when you want to take a sneak preview on the Slow Suze Server. :) (No kidding, 56k dialup running Apache. Thank God it isn't Windows IIS!) |

this is a little off topic because it's men's soccer but i thought i'd throw it in here anyway because i find it interesting (and kind of frightening).
Glasgow Rangers defender Craig Moore was stripped of the captaincy and put on the transfer list after manager Alex McLeish reacted furiously to his wish to play in the Olympics.
now, on the men's side there is an age limit of 23 for the oly's. but each team can have 3 players over that age. (the rules are totally different for women, btw).
and the olympics fall during busy times for premier leagues and such.
and i know that the oly's have been a bit uneasy about having pro men playing in the olympics, probably because it's such a major sport.
but GOSH! to do that to one of your players for wanting to play in the olympics?!
i guess it's just a whole different can of worms for men's soccer. :? |

For those who don't know, even though the opening ceremony is not til friday night, the olympics for soccer begins tomorrow!!
The USA women will be playing home side, GREECE, tomorrow (wednesday) with coverage beginning at 10:30AM Eastern Time on MSNBC.
I believe kick off is actually at 11am eastern time, but that's what the tv guide says, so 10:30am it is!
:D |

Geez, A., falling down on the job here!!! I thought you'd have posted this already! (j/k)
A nice 3-0 victory for the U.S., with HEY, APRIL! nice play for the first 60 minutes by Aly Wagner, who nicely carved up the middle and added a dimension of finesse which was missing in last year's world cup. She also darn near had the first goal 5 minutes in, just whacking it off the crossbar!
I've been beating April up badly, so I have to give her props for having some fun on Crete the other day, jumping off a good-sized cliff several times with one of the assistant coaches.
So, now we know two things: 1) April can actually have fun and 2) there are tsunamis in the Adriatic.
Well, now there are, anyway. :) |
