I am surprised none of the Full Court subscribers posted this.
As most of you know, I do "One-on-One" features for Full Court Press. In May 2003, I interviewed Mark French, head women's basketball coach at UCSB.
I asked Coach French about Kayte's successful rookie season and how it surprised many fans (given that she was a third round pick...the only from that year to make an active roster). Here was Coach French's response:
Quote: Kayte is the most competitive woman that I have been around. I was not surprised by her performance once she got [to the WNBA]. Once she got to Phoenix and the coaches watched her practice, they saw what she was able to do. She got lucky in that some of the foreign players weren't there for the first few weeks of camp. She is unbelievable.
Kayte has the best work ethic of any kid that I have coached, and she is the most competitive. April [McDivitt] is close. April will beat you. But Kayte will kill you while she is beating you. She has a tremendous upside. She works harder and will compete harder than anyone else. Plus, she is a very bright kid. Those are all great qualities for an athlete, or anyone else for that matter.
