Any suggestions? I don't think Linda Sharp is a long term solution.

I'm trying to think of some but can't think of any at the moment. They better not hire NLC *shudder*

I think Sharp will stay the rest of the season. Who knows what happens next year. She's gotten a bad rap as far as her coaching stint in LA goes. I think she was there only a handful of games the very first season.

Perhaps a certain color analyst should be asked to join on as an assistant? She definately has more to offer than the video guy who's standing in.

She went 4-7 before being fired.

She has gotten a bad rap... apparently the coaching was atrocious in the Sparks' first two years. They did underachieve in 1997 and 1998.

Wonder if Sharp really wants to be a full time head coach again. When she came back the first time as an assistant to Miller wasn't there talk about her not wanting a head coaching position, but would 'help' out as an assistant.

If Cheryl Miller was to be the head coach again I don't think anything else could make me happier. It was the biggest mistake ever to let her leave before and if she came back that would be so great!!!

P.S. Someone mentioned NLC....it's only NL now.

I don't know the details of why she resigned, but I guess that's probably true. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop rooting for her return though. I'll always be on her side.

My possible list of candidates for all it's worth:roll:

WNBA
The top WNBA assistant IMHO would be Kevin Cook
http://www.wnba.com/coachfile/kevin_cook/index.html?nav=page
Why this man isn't a head coach in the league already is odd, he has credentials, and he was interested in the job when Cheryl lfeft, I wonder what the inside story is?
And of course there is Carrie Graf

COLLEGE
I would love to see Rutgers C. Vivian Stringer or ODUs Wendy Larry but college coaches are a tough sell they make good money and the jobs more stable, but some realistically lurable ones would be Leon Barmore or Peggy Gillom. Any college assistant from Tennesse or UCONN would be nice!

NBA
Ex NBA players, John Shumate, ex Sun who broadcast Mercury games for one season and had good insight into the team at the time.
Ex Coaches, What's Paul Westphal up to? J/K I know he's at Pepperdine
how about hmmm, can't think of a one:?

AUSSIES
I think Keegan could coach this team, from downunder
or see above WNBA heading

FANS
Betsy who sits in section 101, she coaches out loud and from the stands but she is almost always right with her assesments

When Kevin Cook was in the running for the Merc coach wasn't there something out about him really not wanting to leave Houston. Thought I heard that he had been in the running for other head coaching positions and ended up saying 'no'. Maybe he wants to succeed Chancellor....

Understand Peggy Gillom has been less than successful - but don't really know much about her program.

Who's out there that's been successful and wants a 'summer' job?

I think the WNBA is a tough sell for many college coaches, frankly the NBA can be a tough sell for a really good college coach, they only have to look at what happened to Rick Pitino to want to stay away.

Andy Landers is wacky, I can't see Stringer or Wendy Larry leaving their schools at this point. UT asst coaches have been offered head coaching jobs a dozen times at every level and always say no (Pat Summitt must be something to work for!)

I would love to say Gail G from Duke, but that will never happen either. I'll admit to being a homer but either ASU or UA womens's BB coaches are good choices, they have both done very well with the talent they have. I'd take Sherri Cole from OU in a heart beat too. All in all though I don't see a college coach coming to the WNBA.

As far as Linda Sharp goes, she was only one of the many many coaches that rolled through LA, that is one dysfunctional group of players. I don't hold her losing that job to be that big a deal. I played one year against Coop, Miller & the McGee twins, and they were not just a very talented group of players, they also played tough D, and ran real plays.

Sharp can coach (and of course she must be able to recruit too, since she had all that great talent). Now of course there is no recruiting at this level, but all recruiting is really about is selling the merits of your program. All Coach needs to do is sell the players on her program. I am happy to give her a chance and see what happens.

Here is the thing. How much more can the Merc stand emotional turmoil. Long term Linda Sharp - I know she can couch well by her record @USC. Sometimes it is matter of matching players and coach in the professional leagues. Her personality right now would be calming or at least stable. I saw a few different plays when she has been the coach. I give anyone credit who at the end of the game shakes each players hand as they leave the court. Which she did on Wed. I dont see the in - between how practices are done and the dynamics. I just see the end result. I say we keep her till the end. Then re-evaluate.
There is a respect factor that was lost for awhile. I think Seth and company did a good business move if nothing else. Some fans will return.
Now the next step is to move Timms from the mic to be an assistant coach. We have seen her coach from the sideline and on the radio. She has good dynamics with the players. And lets see. What the hey. So my prediction is by Friday she be Asst Coach Timms. Reason-do changes all at once. I dont see this move as turmoil. The season is not long enough to drag it out. And business wise she will bring fans in. I say Aussies rule. Timms or Graff ?

I'm in the stick with Sharp for the rest of the season crowd and see where it's all at in the end. Definately Timmsy as asst where she'll do a world of good and bring more stability/chemistry team & fan-wise. Though I'd miss her ripping the refs it would be well worth the trade off and would help the org gain that PR thing that they were looking for with Cooper.

Metcalfe had a nice article on Sharp this morning. Also mentioned that the Merc was planning to offer the asst coaching spot to Timms though if she opted to stay in broadcasting it would remain open for the short term.

I'm thinking that coaching has the better upside potential over the long run.

Timmsy would be a great move, coaching wise and PR wise.

I believe her very first WNBL club (the Bulleen Boomers) offered her the head coaching position a few seasons back but she declined.

I think she could be in the coaching mould of Staley and Rizzotti... solid to great PGs who make good coaches.

lol I can't imagine if I was coach...

"How do you break a trap, coach?"

"Take out anyone in your path with a few elbows"

However I'll be happy to do Seth's drafts for him from now on ;)

So I say next year at the draft party we do a quick show of hands and draft the majority choice, Keegan you can vote by phone!

Hey, Adrain was a second round pick, and so was Davis-Wrightsil. Those weren't bad choices (especially not if Shaw and Korstine are the standard we are judging by). Actually there are only four players taken after Adrain in the 2000 draft who are still in the league--Stacey Thomas, Kristin Rasmussen, Shanele Stires, and Nicky McCrimmon. No offense to any of them, but Adrain would definitely be my first choice from that group.

Davis-Wrightsil not a bad pick? When we waived her, we had MUCH better chemistry. She can score but her attitude leaves a lot to be desired. Out of all the ABL players we could've had... we had to pick her in the second round!

Sorry Keegs, I didn't know that about Clarissa. I was barely following the W in '99, since there weren't any UCSB players in the league that year, so all I had to go on was that she was the team's 3rd-leading scorer that year.

Of course she was part of the Brandy Reed deal IIRR, so I guess it was just one headache for another...

Eaction, Adrian is the only 2nd round choice who's stuck, and is finally producing, at least in the rebound catagory
But they need to stop taking odd risks with the second round picks! I know Linda Sharp is a shrewd talent evaluator and if she is the coach next season, I predict we will have an excellent draft!
