Sorry Carol, I'm not a fan of living in AZ. Hate would be too strong a word so I'll go with not very fond of. I have 2 more years left in my self imposed sentence here and then I'm off to greener, cooler surroundings. Give me seasons or give me death!

Also, I'm in NE Phoenix PV area so can't help you on the Chandler, Gilbert area. That's like a day's journey from where I am ;)

I wonder if we can pull your driver's license for something like that, ya Bernadice Arnold. :-p

So exactly HOW are you going to be a Merc fan when you're leaving us in heart already? Hmmm? Phooey.

Carol,
Living here pretty much is a bore unless you are into extreme heat, but for sensible people there are the advantages of no tornados, floods, earthquakes etc (at least not in Chandler Gilbert area) and then there's the Dust, if you love Dust, this is the place for you

4 seasons...OVERRATED! Talk to me when ya gotta shovel a sidewalk or scrape of a windshield w/your flippin' credit card or your car turns to rust dust after you put your key in the ignition or a lovely walk across a parking lot into a blasting, white wind...4 seasons? BLECK! 3, maybe, but 4? You can KEEP 'em!

I don't have to shovel sunlight, hun! WOO FLIPPIN' HOO!!!!!!!!!!
AND...I don't have earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, etc.

Ahhhhhh, much better...the honor of Phoenix once again defended against the secret Sparks fans of the universe...and guess what...ITS GONNA FALL INTO THE OCEAN, ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME! THEN who has the beach front property? :-p

I spent a miserable 16 months in the Valley of the Sun before returning to Colorado, from whence I came. I REALLY don't know what the attraction is. Phoenix is devoid of culture and community. Bland and boring, where running from one outdoor mister to the next seems to generate excitement. I attended every Mercury home while I was living there and still remain an avid fan....

I'd spent my whole life in California until I moved to Kentucky, and you cannot convince me that CA is paradise, or anything close to it. I haven't regretted coming out here for a second. :) There are no massively overcrowded cities here (the Lexington metro area where I live has a total population of 450,000, about 260k in the city itself), no MTBE in the water supply 8) , no earthquakes 8) , no rolling blackouts 8) , no stage 3 smog alerts (no smog alerts at all that I've been aware of) 8) , no massive rush hour traffic jams 8) , people actually know how to drive with courtesy around here :!:  :o  :!: , and the cost of living is affordable. Actually it feels a lot like the way California used to be about 15 years ago :( , and my parents commented on the same thing the first time they came out to visit. Weather isn't bad either--the summer humidity isn't pleasant but it's nowhere near as oppressive as it is in, say, DC/Virginia, and there isn't a ton of snow in the winter. It snowed here on all of five different days last winter (2 in December, 1 in January, and 2 in February), which is hardly anything at all. Don't get me wrong, this place isn't paradise either, but I'll take it over what I left behind.

Carol - after all that, if you are still serious, send me an email. I might be able to get you some info.

And I agree with VT. While I do miss some changing of the seasons, I don't miss the cold and the snow. Give me 110 any day over 6 inches of the white stuff on a layer of ice.

Snow isn't the only thing that's lacking :o

fourth worst poverty rate - 22% below the poverty level
one in five children live in poverty
the highest truancy in the nation
one of the lowest in per-pupil public funding
fourth highest in overall crime
highest in auto theft
seventh highest in death by gun
highest in teen pregnancy
third highest contributor to toxic releases into the environment
one of seven states to remove evolution from the science curriculum

On the bright side, I'm pretty sure the state ranks very high in Circle K's and gas stations per square mile ;)

I'm sure there are gobs of people who love it here. It's not ALL bad, it's just not me. The cost of living is low (as are wages), and you can get a lot of house for your money.

I grew up outside Boston and lived in CA for 5 years so I know all the negs about CA too. Actually I wouldn't move there either.......at least not the lower half ;)

Here's the links for the Chandler & Gilbert School Districts - both have job listings

Carol

While not quite as disenchanted with Phoenix as gia, my significant other HATES it for many of the stats that gia provided. This is actually my second trip here, having arrived from NY in 75, stayed till '82, when I just COULD NOT take the incredible lack of culture that Phoenix offered.

Packed up and moved to LA-LA land, when I hung out till there was one too many earthquakes, or riots, or maybe it was the traffic? The cost of lving, can't remember, but I lived at the beach till '94 and then threw in the towel once again.

My plan was to go down to Tucson which is much more user friendly then Phoenix, but I could not find a job worth anything. If I were raising kids I would not be doing it in Phoenix. If you feel you must come to AZ and can stand the a little snow, I would be heading to Flagstaff, if not then Tucson is a better choice.

I lived in Gilbert the first 4 years back, now in a little neighborhood much closer to downtown and I do love that! Gilbert/Mesa/Chandler are all fine as long as you tatoo your address on your forehead so if you get lost someone can tell you where you leave (just one red tile roof after another).

The heat sucks as others have said, I grew up in snow, so if I had to pick an extreme I am with those that say the heat. I must VIOLENTLY DISAGREE with a previous post about the drivers - having driven up and down the entire east coast, lived in NY/NY/CT/PA as well as NO/SO Cal, I can tell you the WORST drivers in the entire world reside in the Phoenix metro area!

So...sounds like fun eh? Come and join the crowd. Me & my S.O. have plans to leave here in the next few years, but not back to LA LA land, we will be heading north to Sedona...
