Richie Adubato is as much a mystery to me as John Shumate as far as whom to use and how to use them. Last year, I picked Anna DeForge as my sleeper of the year, this year, maybe it'll be Lindsey Yamasaki. Maybe.
Turkish ball isn't shabby.
Lindsey's 19th in scoring (3rd on her team) at 13.3, but third in the league in rebounding at 10.3! Way to go Saki!
Her team, BOTAS, is 4th.
Other WNBA players over there include Saki's teammate Beth Donaphin - another Cardinal alum - Kelly Shumacher from the Fever, and ex-WNBA, ex-everything else, Summer Erb.
Donaphin's 4th in rebounding behind Yamasaki. Anyhow, I now own a Turkish dictionary and if anyone else is interested, I know where the stats are buried. :) |

Erdemir's Kelley Schumacher is firmly ensconced in second in scoring in the TBBL (Turkish Bayanlar (Women's) Basketball League, at 21.8 per game, behind only Evgeniya Pavlova. The NY Liberty/Stanford Cardinal contingent is doing well, with Beth Donaphin ranked 9th with 17.0 ppg for 1st-place Fenerbahce, and Lindsey Yamasaki in 14th for second-place BOTAS at 14.4.
Donaphin is 3rd in league rebounding at 9.5, while Yamasaki is 7th with 8.6. Schumacher is 9th at 8.5 rpg.
Yamasaki isn't exactly known as a playmaker, but she showed up 20th this week with 2.2 assists per game, tops among the Americans.
Schumacher leads the league with 3.5 blocks per game, with Donaphin 9th at 0.8.
If you want to see U.S. names, go to the shooting percentage list, where Donaphin leads the league at 62.9%, Schumacher's 3rd at 57.3, and Yamasaki slipped to 12th this week at 50% even. |

Different strokes for different folks. Turkey's no exception.
Gripe #1: when the NBA took over the parts of the ABA it wanted - (Kentucky was viable, too, guys) - they inherited the ABA's three point stats, but they didn't adopt the three point shot until a few years later.
ABA Statisticians had the best Basketball stats around in those days. "Errors", "Steals" and threes separated from twos all came from the ABA. The NBA didn't want them because if NIH syndrome. (Not Invented Here.)
To this day, the NBA keeps its 3 point apples together with its two point oranges.
Okay, so I finally got around to parsing the Turish box scores, and I find out that they calculate shooting efficiency - in principle a great idea - by the percentage of shots you take at the hoop, from the arc, from the line, from 2 point land. If you take 2 FTs, 2 pointers and 2 3s, and you make 1 of each, then they say you shot 50%.
As the point of shooting isn't "technical merit", why can't we just take actual points over potential points? In the 1/2-1/2-1/2 example above, you still come out at 50%. If you made both free throws and missed both threes, doing it their way you'd still have made 3 shots out of six, but if you do it on a points basis you'd have attempted 12 points and made 4 - 33%. Adios the Shaquille O'Neal problem.
Anyhow, Yamasaki had 19 points as BOTAS Spor cruised to a 92-69 victory.
Oooh, one thing they've borrowed from soccer is "fouls suffered". (See Canada's Charmaine Hooper deck the USA's Abby Wambach eleven times in one game, and you kind of get the idea how important Big Wambo is ... Aly Wagner, too, for that matter, although I'll talk about Wagner more when I write about why Team USA should defenestrate April Heinrichs ..) |

Thanks for the posts.
Strange method for determining shooting percentages. What a nightmare. |

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you for posting reply, Gaucho! I thought I was turning into one of *those* people who post to themselves all the time!
Anyhow, Linds had 19 on Saturday as BOTAS won 105-68. (Parity isn't a big issue in TBBL. Three good teams, then nada.)
I think I'll grab the actual box score - it isn't up yet - when I get it and put the URL up so you can see it. It's kind of interesting to see how other people in other cultures look at the sport, I think.
It turns out there are a few more Americans there than I thought, a couple of whom have played there quite a few years, and pretty happily from what I can tell.
Always ask yourself, when you're not sure, "What would Lindsey Yamasaki do?" |

.... okay, hands up if you saw Anna DeForge's article about meeting Brent Favre .... okay, good, nice article, right? Way to go, chica.
Rebolpuppy and I talked it over, and we agree on something for once.
Hands up if you think "Anna With The Longer Do" is a dead-ringer for a young Martha Stewart?
Sort of "Today, Brent is going to dazzle us with his Mississippi-Wisconsin Cheese Pancakes, just like I used to make before, you know, jail and everything!"
Last year hardly anybody knew Anna, now it'll be all Anna DeForge Magazine, Anna DeForge modelling Armani, Anna DeForge on the Food Network making Mannatech Soup ... *sigh* |

Andy, if you could post a link to the article I'd appreciate it...a couple of my favorite athletes...DeForge and Favre.
Saw Kayte giving some halftime commentary during last nights Suns broadcast. She looked and sounded great.
For more info on overseas bb, check ESPN's WNBA msg board and these sites (hope I recall the URL's correctly):

Sure, mb, no problem, my pleasure. Voila!
Yeah, I like Favre, too, but that was a pretty bad game last Thursday. :(
It's the first time I'd ever seen an article by DeForge. I wish she'd do one on her training regimen and nutrition program.
Ooh, on the off-chance I messed up posting the link, here's the full URL you can cut and paste. Thanks for the other links, too. :)

And yes, Kayte's looking just fine, isn't she?
As for Martha, well, she just never looked this good, huh? No prob getting dates in the Big House now, I betcha. |

The simple things we take for granted are luxuries elsewhere.
Here's the boxscore of a game played this past weekend involving Fenerbahce, current team of Beth Donaphin of the Liberty. Today's Wednesday by my watch, but the Saturday game with Lindsey Yamasaki's team isn't even up on the web yet.
Ah, well. Anyhow, today is lottery day so I guess we're all waiting to find out if we're 'saved', is that right? It's no wonder most of these 'Messiah' players turn out to be duds with the unrealistic expectations we heap on them.
The salary paid to LeBron "Oh, that Carmelo!" James would have saved WUSA, people. Get a grip. |

Perth! A half a world away!
Dan, that makes you my nominee to break the news to Diana Taurasi or whomever that Phoenix is neither Noo Yawk nor LA, and that, yeah, even with her, opponents are going to be able to drive through our soft-as-butter middle. |

2003/12/03 Adana, Turkey
Lindsey Yamasaki let the good times roll again tonight, scoring 16 points as BOTAS edged ErdemirSpor 78-74 to remain undefeated and in second place behing Fenerbahce, who *always* seems to have played one extra game. God? While you're determining our savior, can you tell me why that is?
Saziye Ivegin had 10 for BOTAS, but Meral (Esmeral Ozcelik) lead the way with 32. (These two seem like pretty good Turkish homebrew ballplayers. They both played on the Turkish National team which toured the NCAA preseason, playing pretty nearly even with the Maryland Terrapins.)
The Fever's Kelly Schumacher had 19 for Erdemir in a nice effort and a tough, close game by the looks of things.
I went poking around other stuff in here ... Tangela Smith played for BOTAS one year, and Bell Jordan from Alaska/Anchorage is in the league.
BOTAS also had Nevriye Yilmaz the same year they had Tangela Smith. (Yeah, they won. A lot.)
To the person who asked, it's not that I don't like Taurasi per se, but I think the stated desire to use her as a major WNBA marketing vehicle kind of dictates she end up in LA or New York, league management not wanting to make the Sue Bird mistake again. Too many great players (Swoopes & Smith come to mind) in small markets, too many not-so-great in large markets, and yes, I'm cynical enough to believe it can and will be arranged irrespective of the lottery odds and/or outcome. |

Hey, you, all posting to yourself again. :)
I just wrote a big post in the thread everybody's in. I must be tired, 'cause I thought I hit the right buttons, but no post for the rebolpuppy .. :( I musta logged out immediately, dummy me.
Anyway, I thanked Keegan for the site, too.
Also, you have Turkey email at basketball.com I'm told by Tarik. Seems like a nice guy, huh?
Anyhow, what's the Christmas plan 4 u, Santa Fe or here, let us know, please.
If Kayte goes to the deuce, maybe the Merc can get Brookie from the Sun to take up the foul slack. :)
Mail me. |
