With Coop coaching we might end up with Gillom or Moises defending Katie.
Darn, that was harsh!!!
Speaking of Katie...GO WHITE GIRL!!!...just not this game. Oops, I took her for VGM...will that be good or bad...for us, or for my VGM score? |

Thoughts
1) Start Susanna again next game!!!
2) Glad to see some good PT for Kayte again. Those 5 straight points she scored late in the second half was a big momentum grabber.
3) Another tiff between Cooper and Harrison. Sigh. That situation could turn into a real worm in the apple down the road.
4) How did we only have 13 assists and get outrebounded by 11, and still win the game? Oh yeah, because Minnesota has no offense.
5) 6-3 to start the season, should've been 7-2. Who'da thunk it?
6) BEAT LA!!!!!!!!!!! |

Observations:
1) Reffing blew chunks as usual...how about that one where Katie is off her feet, jumps waist high and into Adrain or Katey, don't remember which, and the foul is ON THE MERC PLAYER?????? Go back to Sears School of Ref'ing, they are just TERRIBLE.
Following gia's example w/o the draw out...Quick, who gets the foul when one player leaves their feet and the other doesn't in a collision? Hmmm...Quick, who gets a foul between the defender and offensive player when the defender is running with the offensive player and just decides to stop? Hmm, I know the answer, the one in a Merc uniform in BOTH cases!  :!: :!: :!:
2) It's decided, new starting line up...
Tuvic
Katey
Veal
Grubin
Lisa
...rotate the other players from there. We still had problems w/the press, though less, and Katey/Tuvic/Lisa were the combination that was working the best on "D" last night/got the lead!
VT
P.S. Cindy, think we found our PF in Katey!!! She BANGS!!!! Can you imagine a lineup of Katey, Maria, Tuvic or Katey, Maria, Lisa???? The rebounding and low post O are gonna rock when we get there. We're doing pretty good right now, but that combination will KICK SOME BOOTY!!!!!! :).

Vt, Kayte is a definite keeper, but I don't agree with your starting line up, there is only on offensive minded player (Grubin) in your starting 5, not good, so Kaytes coming off the bench in my game, because her spark is invaluable :!:
BTW, didn't official #18 (the one who dominated the game) look an awful lot like Katie Smith??? Same pallor  And he sure listened to everything she said! if she said it was out of bounds off the merc, he agreed, it was as usual an outrageous display of ineptitude
And can someone tell me where Adrians aggresion went :?: :?:
Can she only sustain it for the first 3rd of the season? She let that Rookie walk all over her last night.....and she spent WAY too much time at the top of the key...honey thats Jenns spot :P You are a true post player so lets get to some banging in the paint OK? |

Jeff Metcalfe's article today confirms there was (is still?) an issue between Lisa and Cooper during last night's game.
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/mercury/0624merc0624.html
Can somebody who taped the game please review and find out what unforgivable mistake Lisa made that warranted taking her out with 9 to go in the 1st until 4 min gone in the 2nd? If the fans didn't start chanting for her I don't think she would have set foot on the court again.
Then to correct one mistake with another, instead of putting Lisa in for the ineffective Reid, she puts her in for the leading scorer (at that point) Bonfiglio. What part of the math equation am I missing here? |

Coop seems to really like Reid, I can't quite see why, she has trouble finishing and her defense is suspect at best...as suspect as a certain coaches judgement!
In a battle between Coop and Princess, Princess is going to win, cause she is of course, Lisa, Warrior Princess  |

This post from AZCentral says it best:
Author: Kelly Harrison (kharris)
Date: 06-24-02 8:16 am
Lisa Harrison: "I have no problem being professional and being a team player and being about the organization. This can be gone right now for all I'm concerned. It's a team sport, and you have to put personal conflicts aside."
I have complete faith in Lisa's ability to do that. Unfortunately, I have NO faith in Cooper's ability to do the same.
May I also say that I've followed Lisa's career for many years, and she has never had a visible problem with a coach until now? I don't think I need to say anymore. |

| So am I right about the Grubin trade being a solid one and the Reid trade being a bit of a dud? Like my article said? :) |

| gia, I missed what Lisa did in first half but did notice she went out for what I thought was a "breather" and then the announcers for Minn. noticed she hadn't come back which made me realize must have been more than that.. Announcers said something like she must be in the "dog house',etc. I realized something after that offensive foul in the second half Lisa had and the time out after that camera mike caught Coop saying something about "zone" -- appeared directed at Princess.. :? |

Without a doubt. For those who have not had the pleasure of the insight of the platypus, read: http://insaneplatypus.prussia.net/wnba/mercuryspecial.html
Also make note of the last few paragraphs about Veal.... |

While he does make a good point about Reid vs. a draft pick, for this season at least, none of the players taken at #8 or immediately afterward have been as productive as Reid so far. Not to say they might not be in the future, but for now they haven't.
Reid: 9 of 9 games, 6.3 pgg, 3.2 rpg, 40.7% FG
#8 Deanna Jackson: 7 of 9 games, 2.1 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 29.4% FG
#9 Shauna Gortman: 11 of 11 games, 3.5 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 42.4% FG
#10 Michelle Snow: 12 of 12 games, 2.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 44% FG
#11 Danielle Crockrom: 6 of 10 games, 1.3 ppg, 0.5 rpg, 33% FG
#12 Tanty Maiga: 8 of 10 games, 2.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 30% FG |

Ya, but it's all relative........Reid is playing 20+ min per game. Crockum is playing 4 (Jackson 7, Gortman 12, Maiga 13, Snow 10)
While we're comparing ;)
Gortman is 4th is 3PT % (6-11) and is 83% from the line (5-6). Reid is shooting 50% from the line (9-16) and and has never been better than 61% over her career and she's only taken 6 3PT's her entire wnba career. |

I knew someone would bring that up. There might be a very good reason those players are only getting 10 or less minutes a game, i.e. they haven't been playing anywhere *near* well enough to earn any more than that. That's why I never liked the "xx per 40 minutes stats", because with most end of the bench players there's no way they'd come close to those projected numbers if they actually played 40 minutes a night.
Actually, what I find to be a slightly more disturbing trend (if that's the right word) is that 2 of Reid's 3 worst games this year have been the 2 games she didn't start--4 points and 3 rebounds vs. Houston in a loss on 5/29, and 2 points and 1 rebound in last night's win, with a combined 2-13 shooting for both games. She also had her worst game of the year as a starter against Seattle in the loss on 6/14, 0 points and 1 rebound, 0-1 shooting. But in the other six games she started, she averaged 8.5 ppg and 6.3 rpg and shot 22-46 (47.8%), which is pretty darned good.
And BTW, she has averaged 22.8 minutes in her six 'good' games, and 14.7 minutes in her three 'bad' games, 20.1 overall on the season. So it's just like most anyone else--when she produces, she gets to play a lot more. But of course in the games when she hasn't produced, she REALLY hasn't produced, because scoring and rebounding are about the only things she's useful for. |

Well we're basically comparing Reid being productive now vs a draft pick being productive in the future. I'd go for the second option as Reid doesn't seem to be doing much now.
Reid's injuries and limitations make her a dubious prospect beyond the short term. A Deanna Jackson or a Shaun Gortman would have a bright future and would probably end up better than Reed. |

| How about we get two productive years out of Reid where her contributions help us make the playoffs (during which same time frame Jackson and Gortman are still developing and don't give us nearly as much production), "prove" to the rest of the league that she can still play, and then, after the rest of the team has matured enough that they can win without her help, trade her for Jackson, or Gortman, or a first round pick in the deep 2004 draft? |

lol, however I'd argue we're pretty much winning without her now.
I don't think many teams desire Reid. |

The only reason Reid is getting the minutes is because she is one of Cooper's favorites. Maybe Coop is trying to convince us that she made a good choice giving up Bridget for Reid.
I don't dislike Reid. I just don't have the same opinion that Cooper has that she is a better player than Lisa. From what I understand ot the trade, Grubin was who we were going after and Reid was a throw-in, so who cares what she does. GG has proven to be a good trade for Bridget. She is open to the fans and plays great ball. |
