In part is says:
"Mercury 'ownership' interest up
Stephanie Balzer The Business Journal
The Phoenix Mercury, one of 16 WNBA teams owned by the NBA, may get a local owner once details of the league-wide restructuring are finalized.
Mercury President Bryan Colangelo said this week that there are "expressions of interest from several parties to get involved," but he would not disclose names. " |

The change in ownership structure has been a league-wide topic since approoximately the end of last season. Jerry Colangeleo was quoted about it in a Sports Business story in the fall especially as related to establishing franchise values. I don't know of anything imminent on this issue although things have been so busy in other areas lately that I haven't had any time to check very deeply into it. But it wouldn't be a surprise if this happens, much like the Rattlers were purchased out from under Phoenix Arena Sports but are continuing to operate much the same as before.
I will say as loud as a Mercury crowd of 7,000-8,000 can be, there was a noticeable difference Friday in Houston when their crowd of 10K got going. Getting that extra 3K or so back in AWA will make a big difference, I believe, in cranking up the home-court advantage not to mention the team's value since 10K is roughly the break-even mark for WNBA teams. |

Hey Jeff, Glad you came by! :)
Any idea what the value of a team is (roughly)?
(In the far off distance I hear mb breaking open his piggy bank) |
