The Mercury will find out what they're made of tonight on the road vs a quality opponent (and next week in LA). I have faith knowing the platypuses are picking them to win :)
If you just can't get enough information, check out the Mercury Game Notes from WNBA.com
Heard vague chatter that Van might be on his way out though I find it hard to believe.......hey, maybe they'll hire Cheryl Miller. Wouldn't that be ironic?? |

hey tcoop,
No radio stream of the game that I can find. The phoenix station doesn't have the capability, and the houston station stopped doing audio completely for now. :( |

Timms said that there was no one on Swoopes during the inbound. What was Cooper thinking
Was anyone on Thompson as she inbounded the ball?
It does seem the clock was at fault for Swoopes shot, but it shouldn't have come down to that final shot.
The Merc are going to have to improve against the press, period :!:
On the up side, we didn't cave in, we hung tough, and it still looks like we're heading for a really good season.
6-3 is next :D |

What an unecessary loss. Why didn't Cooper stick with what worked in the first half (smart substitutions) instead of coaching scared in the second.
Tuvic 9 minutes, Saunders 2 minutes, Kayte 3 min, Bonfiglio 7 minutes. Has it not been the bench that's been the difference for them? The turnstyle as cbibat called it WAS working. It worked for Sharp last game and it worked for Cooper in the first half of this game.
Did she really pull Harrison after she made a basket but wasn't happy because she didn't get the ball to Grubin like Cooper wanted?
On a good note.......Timmsy needs to take her show on the road after she's done doing this commentary gig. She's gold, especially when it comes to the refs. |

:? I wondered that myself pulling Harrison right there near the end...then Harrison's rebound and layup almost wins it for us! ...
Timmsy is something! :D I liked on the blocking foul on Gramma she said she pitched a tent and was BBQ'in when Swoopes ran her over....
A Heartbreaker...just when I thought we were gonna take one from them in their house.....Im hurting...   |

| Man. First Robert Horry, and now Sheryl. These buzzer-beaters have been killing me lately. When I saw that layup flash up on courtside live with a second left, I was so sure this game was over. Does anyone know where Thompson was inbounding from (baseline or midcourt)? |

I believe Thompson inbounded just inside midcourt, just down from the end of their bench.
UCSB was in a very similar situation against LA Tech this year in the NCAA 1st round. There was just over 4 seconds or something on the clock. We had just made the go ahead basket on a desperation attempt. Coach French put our tallest player on the inbounder. Taylor was able to swat the inbounds pass like a grand slam. Three more seconds were run off the clock, it took that long to come down. There was 1.4 seconds on the clock for the next inbounds. The defense took care of the next inbounds (funny how the details elude me now, I was there, but I can't remember if a shot was even taken, or if we stole the inbounds pass while it was inflight to the player). Anyway, there was one significant difference. LA Tech had to go the length of the court, but the concept is the same.
Things happen. I sure hope the game wasn't lost on a clock keeper error.
I agree, Cooper should have stuck with what was working. We needed some defensive stoppers to shut down Houston's run early before the momentum shift. |

The play was Reid was supposed to be on Swoopes and Williams was supposed to help after the ball was inbounded. Obviously that didn't work.
A pop-quiz:
1) If you did not know the ball was going to Swoopes, raise your hand.
Wow, no raised hands! You're all soooo smart. :D
2) If you did know that Lisa should ALWAYS guard Swoopes, raise your hand.
Oh......now I see all hands are raised. Very Good! :D
No wait....I see Ms Cooper does not have her hand raised.
Ms Cooper, please reread the chapter entitled :
Lisa guards Swoopes |

Yes, very nice work Gia!
Brian, please read these to your wife:
Swoopes scores on Reid three times in a row...the commentators note after both the first and second time; that Harrison should be switched back to guarding her, which Coop finally does after the third time.
Harrison takes (and makes) a 10 foot jumper a little early in the offensive set. This shot gets the lead back to eight. Coach throws a "Coop fit", as Timmsy calls them, and pulls Lisa for not getting the ball to Grubin.
How about subbing Bonfiglio for Reid, and having Tuvic give Gillom a breather? Tuvic is a 58% shooter, and defends at least as well as Gillom.
Just some thoughts. We need to win these close games when we are fighting for that 4th playoff spot down the stretch. We should beat Minnesota, and need to steal one from LA. We'll need to get revenge vs Seattle at their house.
We can do it. GO MERCURY! |

very nice gia, maybe Ms. Cooper was late to class and missed that lesson!
I think it all goes back to the fact that Lisa still doesn't have a damn shirt! If she only had a shirt with her name on it, then maybe Coach would realize she is a critical member of the team! |

Whose fault is it, Coops for having Reid in the game, or Reid for playing such sucky defense?
We can only afford one defensive liability on the floor at a time, and that spot is owned by Grandmama, because she can make it up on the offensive end! |

It wasn't Reid in the game that was the problem. It was Reid on Swoopes at the most crucial point in the game.
Is Jen playing that bad defensively? Seems like she's stepped up her game on both ends. Maybe I'm biased ;) |

Hillary, welcome!!!
Gia, as much as we love Jen, she is a defensive liability. With the exception of the one game, her rebounding is poor, as is her defense. That person making the easy score was either her (wo)man, or her help responsibility.
Often the person scoring on the opposing team is who she is guarding.
Love her offensive consistency. Hope someone other than Grubin (perhaps Harrison) can releive her of being the only offensive option.
Bottom line, for everything she offers offensively, she gives half or more back as a defensive liability. Tina said it well in her post. Funny, yet true. |

Here's an idea: uitilize our bench depth.
In practice the second team is often beating the first team. Why not let them beat the opponents? Wholesale line changes aren't necessary, yet giving the starters a breather and inserting a spark is advisable.
Also, isn't it time to start getting Veal some minutes??? :?: :?: :?: |

MB, todays paper said Vealy had knee pain after practice on saturday, so they will probably keep her wrapped in cotton for awhile longer :(
I would love to see Vealy match up on Harrower in tonights game!
Gia, you are right is was Reid on Swoopes that was the problem...anyone know where Lisa was when this play was happening?
Jenn is OK defensively when she is determined, but to start a game, well If I were the opposing coach I'd take it at her everytime down the floor! |
