Liberty bans WNBA players union from MSG
June 20, 2002
NEW YORK (AP) -- The WNBA players association filed an unfair labor practice charge against the New York Liberty and the league after the team banned union officials from meeting with players at Madison Square Garden.
The WNBPA filed the charge with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday after the Liberty told the union that representatives could no longer conduct meetings with players at the arena.
The WNBPA said earlier this month that a players strike is a possibility next season if a new deal isn't worked out by the start of training camp in April. The four-year collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15.
Pam Wheeler, the WNBPA director of operations, was asked to surrender her season credential while she was in the Liberty locker room after Tuesday night's 71-62 loss to Orlando at the Garden.
``For some reason, the Liberty have radically changed their policy regarding union access to the players' workplace,'' Wheeler said. ``We think this constitutes illegal conduct under the National Labor Relations Act.''
Liberty spokeswoman Brooke Lawer declined comment Thursday, saying she had not yet seen a copy of the grievance. WNBA spokeswoman Maureen Coyle did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. |
