NEW YORK -Former Southwest Missouri State star Jackie Stiles was picked by the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA's first dispersal draft on Thursday.
She had been with the Portland Fire, one of two teams that disbanded after last season. She was the last of 14 players, from Portland and the Miami Sol, that were selected Thursday.
Stiles, from Claflin, Kan., became the all-time scoring leader in NCAA women's basketball when she played at Southwest Missouri, and she was the WNBA rookie of the year two seasons ago. She's joining a team that won the WNBA title the last two seasons.
"Well, I'm going from Kansas to Hollywood," she said. "I have no idea what it's like, but I'm excited about it."
"I was shocked when they picked me," she said. "I didn't think LA was going to be an option. "But my first thought when I found out was, 'I'm going to have a chance to win a championship,' and that means so much to me."
Quote: Cheryl Burnett, hired as Michigan's women's hoops coach Monday, was hoping that her former player at Southwest Missouri State, Jackie Stiles, would be going to the WNBA's Detroit franchise.
Didn't quite work out, as Stiles was selected in the dispersal draft by Los Angeles. Asked about heading to nation's second-largest city, Stiles said: "Well, I never imagined I would be living in LA. But I've always been able to adjust to whatever circumstances I'm in. A city can seem small if you spend a lot of time in the gym." |
