Sol trades Askamp to Sparks for first-round pick

MIAMI (AP) -- The Miami Sol traded center Marlies Askamp to the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday for a first-round pick in next year's WNBA draft.
The 6-foot-5 Askamp averaged 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in six games this season.
Her productivity and playing time have dropped considerably the last two years. She averaged 7.8 points and 7.2 rebounds in 2000, but averaged just 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds last season.
``Marlies is a great person and has been a real warrior for us here,'' Sol coach Ron Rothstein said. ``We wish her nothing but the best.''
The move gives the Sol three first-round picks in the 2003 draft. The team also acquired Minnesota's top selection last week.
Miami also added forward Trisha Stafford-Odom to the roster Monday. Stafford-Odom averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds last year for Houston, which waived her before this season. |
