Briann January is one of those players whose statistics doesn't really do justice to her ability.

Seeing the Arizona State junior play in person puts into perspective how she affects so many aspects of the game with her speed, play-making ability and instincts.

It's why the Pac-10 media members elected January to the preseason Pac-10 All-Conference team, which was announced Tuesday by the conference.
"I don't pay much attention to that kind of stuff, but I am going to do what I can to uphold it," she said.

Joining January on the preseason team are Stanford's Candice Wiggins and Jayne Appel and California's Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker. Hampton was the Pac-10 Player of the year last season and Walker averaged 17.3 points, while Wiggins was player of the year the two previous seasons and Appel was the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season.

January doesn't have all of the accolades that the others do, but the 5-foot-8 guard does a little of everything.

"She's on a team with a ton of talent, so the numbers are not going to be huge," Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "She certainly is more than a stat player. At the end of the game she'll have two charges, a deflection and so many other things that don't show up. She makes so much happen, and it's part of why she is an amazing player."

As starter in 34 games, January concluded her sophomore campaign first on the team in assists (4.0 per game) and steals (2.1) and second in scoring (10.2 points) and free-throw percentage (81.7 percent).

"There were definitely things I needed to work on in the gym during the summer," January said. "I hope it helps me develop into the player we need to help us win the Pac-10 and national championship."
