Use this thread to post info about college seniors, our own scouting thread, so when draft time comes we will be well informed;)
Here iis a link to a small blurb about Mississippi States LaToya Thomas, who along with Chantelle Anderson, is the class of the next draft. LaToya is a Power Forward who can score!

My main problem with LaToya is that her effort can be lacking. This could change at the pro level but it is a concern. Besides that though, she is a perfect fit for the Merc.
I also think Schuye LaRue and Coretta Brown would be great fits. Schuye has good athletic potential while Coretta is a versatile athletic guard with a sweet three point shot.
Unless Maria doesn't come back, I don't think Chantelle Anderson would be a good fit. |

"She was 20-for-30 from the field"
The girl is obviously no shy about shooting!
Her 42 points was six points short of her career high of 48. |

Here is an update on LaToya Thomas
http://espn.go.com/ncw/news/2002/1120/1463855.html
She only scored 19pts this time, but that was while being double and triple teamed. |

| During the quick glimpse I was able to view of last year's tourney, Brittney Jackson caught my eye. Not only was she attractive, she had game for a freshman. |

| Good looks aside  If you want to advance scout, watch Dukes Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis, both high choices in 2004. And of course the exciting Diana Taurasi of UCONN, possibly the #1 pick in 2004 |

Both Turasi and Beard I have known about. Must not forget Stanford's Nicole Powell. Unfortunately I don't have the time to keep up with all of this, so I rely on the boards to paint a picture, then ascertain what I can when I get a quick glimpse.
With the coaching changes, possible relocation, and expansion; this year should prove interesting for the WNBA. Then, in 2004, one heck of a draft class will be available. Also, we may have a new collective bargaining agreement...perhaps even free agency. Ego Cooper may return...what joy! |

| This has been an active off season. News every few days. It's fun. I am thrilled with the rumor Cynthia Cooper may come back to play in the WNBA. She was an awesome player. When she comes into America West arena to play against the Mercury I hope she has a monster game. Stuffs it in the faces of the fans who have massive egos. Go Coop go! |

You actually want the Mercury to lose a game? Does that mean you love Cooper more than Gillom? ;)
The massive ego would be Cooper's trying to make coming back. She was a great player but she did not have the people skills to be a great coach.
She might have been fine talking to you one on one, or making a speech for Kim Perrot, but in the authority position? Not good. Personally I don't care if she comes marching into AWA doing her face slapping & roof raising gestures  & kicks our butts as long as she's not behind or on OUR bench. |

Nicole Powell has a serious back injury, may miss a large portion of the season (even a possible redshirt!).
Iciss Tillis would be good... if she was a wing. She has good skills but I'm not sure whether she's up to playing D at the wing because she's certainly not a WNBA post. She's like a LJ without the inside strength.
Cheryl Ford has potential. Wouldn't mind seeing her as a second round pickup.
As for Coop, PLEASE DON'T COME BACK. |

Cynthia Cooper is a good person. She did too have the skills to be a good good coach. It is not all about her. She has high moral standards and that just drives some of you crazy. You just can't stand that and the fact she has burned us with her great playing. Why don't you ego maniacs just let it go? This is a reason I seriously considered not being a fan any more. You treated a sweet and loving person like Cooper so bad. At times the bashing, name calling, and heckling made going to the games no fun. It is supposed to be a joyful time. I was so frustrated and angry right after the season ended that I came very close to not renewing my season tickets. All the bashing, the losing etc had taken its toll. It seemed it wasn;'t worth the hassle any more. But my loyalty runs deep. As hard as things may get I can't give up on my team. They need supporters like me. They need die hard fans.
I don't like Linda Sharp that well but I refused to bash her. She was our coach. I didn't agree with her benching Jen for an injury she did not have. But Ididn't heckle and call her names. No coach deserves bad treatment. I'm still VERY angry over what happend in LA. And yes I would like the Mercury to lose a game. That is if Cooper is on the other team. No I don't love her more then Jen. But I do really admire her. A couple days ago I watched a game from early last season. Everytime the camera got on Cooper I watched really close and I didn' see dirty looks or hear foul language. In fact I saw her clapping for Veal on a good play. I saw her joking with the coaching staff. I saw her prasing the team. Yelling, all coaches do that. Be sure John Shumate will yell. He will probably be hard on the players. I have no problem with that. Linda yelled too. It's all apart of coaching. Cheryl Miller did a lot worse then yell and what you people insist swear at her players. She did much worse. Bottom line is Cynthia was a great coach. You are the ones with the massive egos. |

Oh Hannah, this was not meant to upset you, but please, Cynthias high moral standard has nothing to do with her coaching ability or her decision to come back and play. Jenn has a high moral standard too and you don't see anyone ever saying a bad word about Jenn.
She is coming back because she needs attention. Unless she announces her comeback with the intention to play for the leagues worst team because it is all about helping the league grow, until then, it's still all about her. |

gillomfan, I think you were the one who started the Cooper discussion (and the normal uproar that goes with it) in this thread about Draft Prospects. I don't even get the fans/massive egos reference and what that has to do with anything.
Anyway, I don't think a lot of people here care if she comes to the AWA wearing tutu & riding a yak (how's that for a visual?). I think we're focusing on the new vision, that is, the John Shumate led Phoenix Mercury
So.......how about those Draft Prospects? |

Cynthia Cooper was not a good coach.
But then again, I guess it depends on what your opinion of a good coach is.
I'm overjoyed that John Shumate will be coaching this year, I can smell victory. |

Three words - get over yourself. That is all I will say on this matter.
And to post something on-topic, there might be some international players coming worth looking out for. I'll snoop around to see what I can find out. |

| I think LaRue got kicked off her Italian team because she wasn't performing though it is possible she was homesick. She's still young; she was dumb to leave college early to play in the pros especially when she's not ready for the mature European game. European teams have no hesitation about kicking off imports if they're not performing. |

Doubt I'll be able to watch the games today, as I am putting in some time at the office. Yesterday, between family activities, I read where Beard and Turasi had good games recently. Keegan, I also noticed Jess(ica) Foley ahd a great game for Duke.
A client told me an associate of his said to watch freshman Noe for ASU. Turns out she had a double-double in her debut. Hope to attend Monday evening's game.
Hannah, you keep on being the great fan that you are and respect the fact that people have differing opinions. Mine is that Coop was one of the greatest players and one of the poorer coaches. Please let the past be and look ahead to what appears to be a very bright future. |

| I am willing to put the past behind me. Mike, you are the one that every chance you get rails on Cooper. Leave her alone. You need to respect my opinion. It goes both ways. I am thrilled John Shumate is our new coach. He is what we need. The Mercury is rising in Phoenix! |

| South Carolina senior wing Jocelyn Penn had 68 points, 16 rebounds and 13 steals in 2 games. She's a good slasher, athletic, plays solid D. Her downside is that she doesn't have a perimeter jumpshot but she is comparable to Adrienne Goodson (who isn't half bad lol). Potentially sleeper of the draft. |

| One to watch that sat out last season due to the transfer rule is Allison Curtin at Tulsa. She played 3 years at Illinois and was All Big 10 at least 2 of those years. She's a threat at both ends of the court. No doubt that had she stayed at Illinois and played her Sr. year last season, she would have gone in the first round of the draft. |

Well a decent senior prospect, Caton Hill PF for Oklahoma tore her ACL last night so cross her off your list of high draft picks...although the next draft is so weak that she will probably get drafted anyway and be on the IR for a season, she won't play in the 2003 WNBA season!
Now about LaToya....
If you are to lazy to click skews link here is a blurb about her stats over three games
Quote: On the week she totaled 97 points and 32 rebounds and went 15-for19 from the charity stripe. Besides setting new WNIT records for the preseason and postseason, she shot .667 against Tulsa and .600 against Cincinnati.
This girl could be just the piece we are missing. Skew, do you think she can play the three or is she a real 4? She seems like a stronger Tina Thompson, is that a decent assesment?
If we get the #2 pick, she can be ours;) |

:D caught the end of the Florida/Florida State game last night... Hayden #55 center(All American - Junior) definately passes the 'look' test. She is 6'4" and looks to be a force in the middle.. She had a double double last night. The announcers mentioned the past players Ross(former University Of Mississippi player) had coached (Milton and others).. writeup link below..

Well I'm not skew but a comparison to TT isn't a good one. TT is a good three point shooter and probably the best post defender in the league. LaToya doesn't have 3 point range and her D is mediocre at the best of times. She is potentially the better scorer and rebounder but she needs a kick up the backside sometimes as she can look quite apathetic. |

USC was down 18pts at one time and ended up winning 83-79....
