Arizona State-Rutgers Women's Basketball Game Cancelled
Sun Devils and Scarlet Knights were scheduled to play on Saturday night
ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS - The Arizona State-Rutgers women's basketball game scheduled for Saturday in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been cancelled. The following statement was issued by ASU women's basketball head coach Charli Turner Thorne.
"This morning the Arizona State women's basketball program suffered a tragic loss. A family member of senior Aubree Johnson's passed away while in St. Thomas to see Aubree play in the Paradise Jam basketball tournament.
"The ASU basketball family extends well beyond the players and coaches listed on the roster. It includes the families and loved ones of every player, coach and support staff member in the program. When one of them encounters a loss, it is a loss that is shared by every member of the `family.' With that it mind the team decided that it would be best to not go forward with playing Rutgers in tonight's championship game.
"We would like to express our appreciation to Nels Hawkinson and the entire Paradise Jam tournament staff; head coach C. Vivian Stringer and the Rutgers women's basketball program and the staff of the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort for all of their support, thoughts and prayers during this time.
"The entire ASU family would like to express its sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Aubree, Tom, Cyndie and the rest of the Johnson family."
The No. 13/12 Sun Devils were scheduled to play the No. 18/18 Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the championship game of the Paradise Jam on Saturday night.

Player's brother dies, Lady Sun Devils cancel game

The mysterious death of a player’s teenage brother has led ASU to cancel a women’s basketball game.
15 year-old Jordan Johnson had traveled to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to watch the Lady Sun Devils take part in a tournament called the Paradise Jam.
A police spokeswoman told the Associated Press Jordan died in his sleep. She had no other details or a cause of death.
Jordan is the younger brother of forward Aubree Johnson. Aubree is a senior who came to ASU from Post Falls, ID. She also has an older sister who was a swim team captain at the University of Washington.
The Lady Sun Devils had clinched a spot in the tournament’s title game against Rutgers.
Coach Charli Turner Thorne said, “The ASU basketball family extends well beyond the players and coaches listed on the roster. It includes the families and loved ones of every player, coach and support staff member in the program. When one of them encounters a loss, it is a loss that is shared by every member of the `family.' With that it mind the team decided that it would be best to not go forward with playing Rutgers in tonight's championship game.”
The game was cancelled under an NCAA rule governing catastrophic events and will not be counted in the standings.
Sooo horrid. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Aubrey, her family and all who are close.  |

My heart dropped when I heard the announcement on the radio prior to the Duel in the Desert.
My prayers go out to Aubrey and her family. |

I opened the paper this AM thinking I'd see an article about the tournament, but instead was horribly shocked by this news.
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the Johnson family, and their extended ASU family, at this time of loss and grief. |
