Former WNBA All-Star arrested on disorderly conduct charges
September 18, 2002
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Brandy Reed, a former WNBA All-Star whose career was sidetracked by behavioral problems, was jailed Wednesday on outstanding warrants after her arrest on disorderly conduct charges.
Reed, the Phoenix Mercury's top scorer in 2000 and a Southern Mississippi star, was arrested when officers, investigating burglaries, stopped her on a street to ask for identification, police Lt. David Morris said.
Reed used a different name and was taken to the county jail, where she was correctly identified, police said. In the outstanding warrants, Reed was charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving on the wrong side of the road.
The 6-foot-1 forward was third in the WNBA in scoring in 2000 at 19 points a game and was Phoenix's only All-Star that season.
She missed most of last season because of behavioral problems and played in just five games this year, averaging 7.6 points. She was suspended June 18 for conduct detrimental to the team.
Reed played for Southern Mississippi from 1994-96 and was the school's player of the year for the 1995-96 season. |

| Brandy has a tormented soul. She is so strung out on drugs that she probably had no idea how far down she is. I feel bad for her. So sad. I said a prayer for her as soon as I heard the news. She needs help but doesn't want it. Her WNBA career is all but certainly(sp) over. But she is still young. I hope she gets help before her it's too late to save her life. |

| She doesnt need prayers, she's to far from that. What she needs is jail, maybe it will make her realize what a screwup she's been, and get her to a better point in her life. Brandy will only get help if she wants it, and I doubt she does. She probably doesnt relize that there is anything wrong with the drugs she's doing and the way that she's acting. And as long as she's happy with what she's doing then she should keep on doing it, a couple of jail terms will change her ideas of fun, or maybe not. But hopefully she'll get what she deserves in whatever she decides to do. |

As a corrections officer I see people like Brandy every day. I doubt very much that any jail time she does for these charges will change anything. She will do very little time if any.
The only thing that is going to help Brandy is for her to grow up and realize that the world doesn't owe her anything because she has an unhappy past. So do many other people who have overcome their problems and made something of their lives. Brandy has to want help and to change. From what I have seen not only does she not want help, she doesn't even seem to realize she has a problem that SHE has to take responsibility for. That's what is truly sad. |
