Quote: One of the league's new rule changes is a reduction of the shot clock from 30 seconds to 24 - which would be in Westhead's favor. He is known for coaching high-powered offenses.
"I think the women will enjoy the game a little more... . They will enjoy playing for Paul," said Bryant, 51. "That's going to be the greatest thing for some of them. And he [was] an English professor; he'll throw a little Shakespeare at you."
Westhead, 67, said he went after the Phoenix job, intrigued over the concept of how women might adapt to his high-scoring system. His coaching resume includes stints with the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Lakers in the NBA. In the college ranks, he coached La Salle, Loyola Marymount and George Mason. Westhead graduated from St. Joseph's in 1961.
"There's a high risk with this system... . I've never coached women and I thought this would be a perfect chance to try it," Westhead said. |
