Katrina charity game important to Amaré

Amaré Stoudemire will be in Houston this weekend to help Hurricane Katrina evacuees in a way few people can. Stoudemire has the wealth to contribute heartily and the basketball stature to help sell Sunday's NBA Players Hurricane Relief Game. He also can come closer than most to grasping the victims' level of misfortune and frustration, based on a childhood in which he practically raised himself through his teen years. "I can relate to being on the streets, not really having a stable home," Stoudemire said. "But going through a tragedy like that (in the Gulf Coast region), it's tough to relate to."
Stoudemire was moved by the media coverage but wondered how he could help relief efforts until game organizer Kenny Smith called. Stoudemire leaped at the chance this week, delaying the expected conclusion of his contract extension talks with the Suns.
Stoudemire is donating an undisclosed amount of money, including a contribution from the Suns organization.
Sunday's game is expected to raise $1 million.
Stoudemire headlines a list of stars that includes LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Dwyane Wade. Stoudemire and Bryant will promote the game on a media conference call today.
"It's only right to want to do it for the kids and families," Stoudemire said. "It's a tragedy that it came to New Orleans.
"We're looking forward to reaching out and touching those families and having a huge impact."
Players are loading trucks of their donated supplies and delivering them to metro Houston shelters before the game Sunday. Stoudemire will have two trucks full of goods.
He also will donate $100 per dunk this season and hopes a sponsor will match the donation. Next week, he will tape an episode of Wheel of Fortune, his second appearance on the show, also to raise money for Katrina victims.
TNT will show Sunday's game tape-delayed at 8 p.m MST.
HUGE ATTA BOY for Amare'
