Quote: so all we really need offensively from our centre is the ability to catch the ball if left alone, hit the layup, and contest for offensive boards.
The Mercury have needed that since day one, that being said if we can get a Tamika Williams, we would have a deeper bench at the post position. I think with a little bit of polish Sandora can fill that role, but right now she's not ready.
I think the Mercury should try to get a post coach help with the development to go along with all of our point guard coaches. |

My thoughts weren't aimed at you in particular, GAgirl, you just inspired the post. Whenever I think about what we need in a guard, I start thinking of the most-needed atttributes in my head, but then when it comes time to consider who we can go after that has those attributes the list comes up pretty short... even Sue Bird & Lindsay Whalen fall short!
Same with post players... I always seem to end up with LJ, Griffith, Leslie or Ford, and of course they are all effectively untouchable.
It's always about compromising something, and I guess the trick is working out a balance that doesn't have any huge weaknesses. (At least until another 10 years time when the talent depth in the league is at another level) |

How long before Charlotte gives up on McCarville? She's a big body who can definitely rebound. Might not be much of a scorer at this level, however. Charlotte is the dumbest franchise in the league. When you need a player, call Charlotte as Houston did for Dawn Staley, Indiana did for Kelly Miller and Sacramento did for Nicole Powell.
Wait a year or two and you'll be able to get McCarville for a ham sandwich. |

I didn't say a ham sandwich with cheese, just a plain ham sandwich. The folks in Charlotte aren't that stupid.
She can't score but McCarville can rebound and if you want somebody to protect Taurasi and Taylor, she can knock defenders off with some pretty mean picks.
Come on, for a plain ham sammich, that's not a bad swap. |

Heh, I dunno, I'm kinda hungry - a ham sanga'd be good right about now ...
I'm really just kidding (well ... I *AM* really hungry, that part wasn't a joke), I know Shaq has a heap of potential, she just didnt have a good rookie year. Give her a few more years before we go giving away our precious food stuffs  |

From the East Valley Tribune:
http://www.wnba.com/mercury/news/tribune_050829.html
Quote: "The number one goal is to have the starting lineup that played the middle portion of this season intact and here prior to the start of next season," said general manager Seth Sulka, who added Phoenix will also look to increase its post depth. "We feel that that basketball team is a championship team."
Only DeForge, a restricted free agent, and reserves Lisa Harrison and Niele Ivey, both unrestricted free agents, aren’t under contract for 2006. DeForge has said she wants to return, and Sulka said there are no plans to break up the league’s best perimeter trio (along with Taurasi and Taylor). As for Harrison and Ivey, their futures are up in the air.
Makes sense to me- don't mess around with the big three. |

I think if we can't get some significant value for Anna then don't make a trade. ie an experienced rebounding post or a true point guard.
Lisa its a good time to retire.
I think Niele could be effective being in place the whole season, but that will depend on who's the coach.
If they have to learn a new system, how long will it take if everyone arrives on time. |

WNBA to Hold Draft Lottery on October 24
NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2005 – The WNBA Draft Lottery to determine the top three picks in the 2006 WNBA Draft will be held Monday, Oct. 24, the WNBA announced today.
The Charlotte Sting, with a regular season record of 6-28, has the best opportunity to gain one of the top three picks in the draft. The San Antonio Silver Stars (7-27) and the Minnesota Lynx (14-20), have the second and third best chances, respectively, of landing one of the top three picks.
WNBA officials and representatives from the accounting firm of Ernst & Young will conduct the Draft Lottery at WNBA Headquarters on Fifth Avenue in New York, which will include the five teams that did not qualify for the 2005 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery will establish the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on each team's finish during the 2005 regular season.

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 -- When the WNBA conducts its annual draft in 2006, it will mark the fifth year that the team receiving the top pick in the WNBA Draft has been decided by lottery. Prior to that, the top pick went to the team with the worst record from the previous season.
During the first two seasons with the lottery system in effect, the team with the worst record from the previous season, and thus the best chance of earning the first pick, did not won the lottery. However, in the 2004 Draft Lottery, the Phoenix Mercury finally saw the odds fall in their favor. But once again in 2005, form did not hold true and Charlotte snuck in and nabbed the top pick. Who will get the honor in April? |
