Official 8/21 Lynx @ Mercury game thread
I'll go for it one more time. After watching our bench in action, I have confidence my luck will hold out and we will get this winn tonight.
Lynx are a different team without Katie Smith. But as I said before, we can't take anything for granted. Minn has had a way of playing spoiler. They've won games against Houston,Detroit, NY, Indiana, Seattle Twice, & us this season.
We must keep Tamika Williams away from the board. She had 14 rebounds in their loss to Seattle 8/18.
We must play our bench when feasible. Especially Sandora. If we make the playoffs we'll be depending on her in the post. Her 3 pointers won't hurt us either and keep oposing teams off guard.
As potd said: beat the crap out of the refs if they don't shape up
Will other more knowledgeable people please add to this? |

Don't know if I'm knowledgable, but I know we need to control the boards and keep Svet from having a good game. Keep the turnovers down, play hard and let the coaches worry about the officiating.
Do all of these things and we'll win.
Is Hayden going to play tonight? |

With my credibility, intelligence, and responsibility in question, I will still give it shot.
What Dr. maniac said. Especially about letting the coaches deal with the officials and controlling the boards. I think Svet can go off on us, as long as we contain everyone else. At least that is what we did last game.
Minnesota knows that a loss in this game will pretty much do them in. Phoenix would only need one more win or Minnesota one loss for them to be eliminated.
Of course, I am sure Phoenix knows the consequences as well. And I hope they remember last year but not so much as to put undue pressure on themselves.
And on a serious note......Go Mercury and stay out of the doo doo. |

| Phoenix must be playing great-and DT with 17 at half-0n fire!! Looks like Graf is playing the bench ALOT again. That is all well and good, but why didn;t she do it all year? There were games they were ahead quite a bit and she didn't put them in. Is she mad at Penny or something? She started out great, then never got back in the whole half! I don't get it. Anyways. GO MERCURY!! Keep up the good play And WIN!! |

| From all reports, they're just resting her calf (that was hurt in the Indy game ... if it was indeed from the kick, then it's probably a cork - and nothing much to worry about). With Snell playing well especially on the offensive boards, it's the perfect time to give Penny a breather. |

What a great win for the Merc!
Good to see Sandora and other bench players getting some QUALITY minutes. We only had 9 turnovers, shot 50% from the field, had 23 assists on 31 baskets, and outrebounded the Lynx 34-27. Oh and Ambrosimova didn't go off on us! Maybe they read the keys to the game as provided by all of the knowledgeable posters here :P
Huge win! I guess I will have to be a temporary Comets fan now
GO MERCURY!! |

Saw Lisa getting help off the court at the end of the game - anyone know her status? I was quite pleased that she seemed to read Cam's posts regarding her offense, and took her shot when it made sense.
Sandora was very strong tonight, although I thought a little more hesitant at points than the other night. But I'm not complaining! I think she's proving her worth - I know I have lots of faith in her, and I'm glad she's getting the chance. Snell's shot didn't fall as often as she'd like, but she sure can bang down low! Really, everyone had a pretty damn good game.
Nice to have another game where our starters create the lead, and then our bench can keep it and even add to it. That just speaks volumes, IMHO. |

| Taurasi and the trainer helped Lisa off the floor at halftime too. She was walking very gingerly |

No one could be more pleased than I am. Her efficiency in the last few games has been every good, offensively and defensively. If she keeps this up, we will make the playoffs and pose a big threat to Sacramento. |

It was a good game. Very similar, really to Friday's win over San Antonio. I knew it wasn't going to be a blow out because Minnesota is not the type of team to give up, but it was a very comfortable win.
PTfan, Penny has a sore calf and she didn't play because they didn't need her. She hit both her 3 point attempts, but it looked like she was having a hard time pushing off her leg. She said she will be okay. Graf says she is day to day....which translates into, she will should start Tuesday. I guess she hurt it against Indy, but aggravated it again on Saturday and it stiffened up some.
Lisa Harrison twisted her ankle a little bit on the very last play of the 1 half. She came back and played most of the second half and did quite well. 4-4 from the field and 4 rebounds, one steal and one block. It was on the blocked shot that she hurt her ankle (10.9 seconds left), but the play resulted in a layup by Anna at the buzzer.
Another interesting stat: the Mercury had ZERO turnovers in the first half to Minnesota's 7. Of the starters, Kamila, Dee, and Anna had turnovers in the second half....the other 6 were with the bench players and most were bad passes.
Most importantly, the Mercury eliminated Minnesota tonight from the playoffs with this win. Best case for the Lynx is to tie with the Mercury and we have the tie breaker - also because of the win. And the "magic" number with LA is 2. That is a combination of wins for the Mercury or losses by LA. There is a chance, if the Mercury could somehow win the last three, have a legitimate chance of ending up in the #2 spot in the west. It is a long shot...but not impossible.
Good job Mercury. |

| A couple of great wins this weekend and so much better due to the contributions off the bench. Very happy also to see that Diana is back in true form and the AD's shots have been falling the past few games. By the way, AD has now improved her free throw shooting to 85.2% on the season, has currently made 22 straight, and 36 of her last 37 dating back to July 15. We'll need the full team Tuesday at Sacramento. Got to have 1-2 wins to make the playoffs. There now is no question that Seth did the right thing in bringing in Maria for those 8 weeks. Without her having been here and contributing as she did, it is improbable that the Mercury would be in the position they are in now as only 1 or 2 losses without her during that time would have left the Mercury outside looking in. Hope those "experts" on the other boards are enjoying their crow! Nice job, Seth! |
