Some were upset when Plenette was traded, thinking we could have obtained more for her (we couldn't...everyone knew someone was going to be cut, because we had to make room for Maria).
Since Pierson was traded and Stepanova was activated, here are the teams' records:
Phoenix: 4-1
Detroit: 1-5
Note, with Detroit, this is not necessarily a cause-and-effect situation, as the Shock have had other problems (e.g., Powell's suspension and a lack of consistent free throw and three-point shooting). But Detroit's second round pick next year is looking better and better... |

I personally didn't have a problem with the Pierson trade. Knowing Maria's game (and having watched her in the Olympics, knew she had improved from her previous Mercury days), and knowing the dire need we had in the middle, I thought it was prudent.
I think it was a good move, and just wish it was a permanent one with Maria signed for a few years. I hate not knowing when she's staying, when she's leaving, how long we'll be together. Hmmm - sounds like some kind of dysfunctional love relationship! What sweet agony.
No matter how long she stays, we all know that Maria Stepanova is a much bigger factor to the Mercury's success than Ms. Pierson. And I'm a big DoubleP fan, I think she's very talented. But facts are facts. Maria's better.
Besides, since it seems that the Shock are our favorite trade partner, they'll probably end up getting that draft pick back in some way, shape or form. Meanwhile, we can use the extra goodies in our bag to get what we want when contracts come up again. Like we did with Kamila, who has been a most welcome addition!
That post-Maria record you listed sure makes Mr. Sulka look like a genius. |
