OK< let's see if I'm the lucky one who starts the thread...and gets a win

We have a chance this evening if our shots fall and if Charlotte plays like they have so far this season. I'm looking for Diana to shoot better and Shereka to just shoot!

Let's hope you have better luck when starting threads than when you're coaching the team ;)

Its half time - so far so good. Sad thing about the last 2 games is with one of our missing starters their numbers would have more than made up the differences in the losses, but.. adversity makes us stronger ( :P )

Could someone tell me what the coaches see in Wright? She's starting because people are missing, but how has she managed to stay on the team...... :?

Hey, to the person that suggested the WNBA broadband, thanks. I loved being able to watch the Mercury play an away game. Excellent.

I was a little concerned with the lack of scoring for 4 whole minutes in the 2nd half. Yikes.

Penny, won't you please come home? Or...at least to Phoenix?

Great first 30 mins, underwhelming last 10 mins. The Sting really aren't that good but we got our first win. Freaky Reke had a great game (career high in points) and DT and Anna were fab for the first 30.

I wasn't too sure about a couple of Graffy's subs down the stretch. She should have subbed Plenette out down the stretch and I think she yanked Snelly too soon for Anna (who did nothing but knock down some FTs down the stretch and that's just the usual for her). Yeah yeah Anna's one of the stars and I'm a Snelly fanperson but give her a couple more minutes because she knows how to contribute down the stretch. The Merc went -3 for the rest of the game after Snelly went out at 7:30.

I didn't get to see the game tonight because I had to work :( Why did Plenette miss so many shots? Was she taking bad shots or what?

She must have read your mind
Coach saw something we haven't & Shereka proved it tonight. WOW :D
Now we want to see her keep it up. Show consistancy

Shereka scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half.
tonight's stats:
4 of 5 FGM, 1of 2 3pointers, 8 of 10 FTM, 3 rebounds & 1 assist

*** Also - kudos to DeForge who scored 20 pts and Taurasi who added 19 pts to lead the Mercury to a 68-58 triumph over the Charlotte Sting.

DeForge and Taurasi each made four 3-pointers to help the Mercury to a 56-35 lead with 10:56 to play.

While I give much credit for last night's win to Caune who started the game thread, I did yesterday receive a PM from some "Iowa Weeble Dancer" who told me she would be at last night's game in Charlotte. I am sure her presence did help the Mercury get the win. Now I have to wonder if she will end up staying for a month in Charlotte like she did in Phoenix last September? On the other hand, she won't have the Brigade to take care of her in Charlotte so she probably will have to move on.

Yes, great work by the wild weebler and her crazy crunk partner in crime for their parts in bringing us the much-needed win.
I'm thinking the Charlottans knew they were in for a long night as soon as they saw those two enter the building 8)

ok, back from charlotte! i had just written a really long post and somehow it got eaten  so i have to start over.

first off, charlotte is the more BORING ARENA EVER. the fans there are just zzzzzzz. there was about 6 mercury fans there and i think we were as loud as the 34 sting fans that were there :P
and if i can get this rant out: we tried to buy tickets right behind the merc bench and they wouldnt let us! so we get to our sucky cheap nosebleed seats to find out the only one in the section behind the merc bench is seth! ok, we're trying to spend good money here and they won't let us? what is that about?!

so anyway, my take on this game:
GO SHEREKA! she played great! i was very impressed.
i was also impressed with plenette, i think she has really improved since last season. my highlight of the game was the team having to hold her back because she was about to go postal on one of the sting players for throwing her to the floor 8)
anna had an amazing first half of shooting.
ashley has improved but she still needs to bulk up to really be effective on defense.

the merc had a fantastic first half of basketball. but the second half was the longest second half of my life. whatever about us shooting bad in the second half... we could barely get the ball into our half of the court. our ballhandling and in bounding was scary to be mild. then on top of it our passing got sloppy. it was just ugly.
and sorry keegan, but snelly scares me when she is trying to handle the ball. i really think she is just 'timid' and i hope with more game experience that will fade and we can get to the real snell.

and one other thing i'll get off my back early in the season.... dee's shot selection at times really had me scratching my head. now, along with that i must add that we were yelling 'MOOOOOOOOVE!!!!!!' far more often than we should have to! it's like the team was glued to the floor and NOBODY would move, or run any plays. if our offense stays like that its gonna be a long season!
so i understand dee and anna will take it upon themselves to make their own shots, but i just think as a team we could do a little better with that.
and i'm not sure what it is but dee just seems.... 'off'.
i'm sure as a fan i've come to expect too much from her, but her attitude overshadowed her play for me last night. i know when you're that good you can cop a bit of an attitude, but it was a little overwhelming. and i also know the refs tend to give her a hard time shall i say? but when she is constantly harassing them about every single shot she misses, etc, i don't think they are gonna start laying off her anytime soon!
she just didnt look like she was having any fun out there.
{ok end rant, sorry dee!!!}

so, anyway... moral of the story. i missed penny! :P
maybe when we get penny back the team will lighten up a little.

and a win is a win and i'll take one early in the season 8)

I'm not liking it either.
You're spot-on IMO in saying that constant harassment gets you nowhere with refs. It's like the boy who cried wolf. Pick your spots, Diana, don't just go off every damn time.
Not only will it not have the desired effect with the refs, but it also wears thin on your teammates who are trying to stay focussed & get on with the game.

That is why she shouldn't be traded, she's the only "enforcer" on the team!

As to Diana, I think taking that time off during this "off" season has not helped her. She does seem to be lacking in her usual passion, and harassing refs isn't going to help her get it back.
Harassing the refs is MY job Dee, you just play!

Glad you had a good time aml...when are you coming to Phoenix????

i was actually thinking of you last night, caune, because i made sure to get the names of the refs before the game 8)

i had a good time yelling at michael price... it brought back memories of phx!
another highlight was when a sting player slammed into mike and sent him hurdling towards a camera man :P
and of course me yelling 'THAT'S WHAT YOU GET!!!!'

as for phx, i would love to come when my buddy keegan is there but that is all dependent on when this coaching thing begins! so tentatively august, but i have to keep my fingers crossed!

Speaking of my favority Merc player (PLENETTE!!!) this was posted on another message board I frequent, the Big 12 fan board. This board has some of the most knowledgeable women's college bball fans I have seen, and one of the ones whose opinions I respect the most posted this after the Fever game:

This past Tuesday, I did get to see some WNBA action. The Phoenix Mercury came riding into the town to pay a call on the Indiana Fever. The Fever carried the game, led by Tamika Catchings and her usual stellar play. Catch had 28 points and 9 rebounds, and in the late going redirected quite a few of Diana Taurasi's attempt to shoot the Mercury back into the game.

But a bright spot for the Mercury came off the bench and aggressively brought the team out of some holes in the second half. Plenette Pierson came into the game and immediately found a hole to the hoop late in the first half. She missed that shot attempt. It would be the last shot she'd miss all evening.

Plenette went 7-for-8 for 15 points and 5 rebounds. Much of that production at the expense of Ebony Hoffman and Kelly Schumacher. Outgirthed by the former. Outheighted by the latter. Despite the deficits in the bulk and height, Pierson played a very aggressive game as if her uniform had "Texas Tech" on the front instead of "Phoenix"

If she keeps this up, she'll see a lot of extended missions in the games ahead.

I can't help but remember how people were ragging on Plenette over the last couple of seasons. Sounds like she's really coming into her own! I can't wait to see her play tomorrow!!!

The $64,000 question...IF. Well, actually the "about $44,000" question (have to check the CBA)...

LOL, Diana has always harassed the refs..since her freshman year in college. Honestly, she looks a bit rusty to me (from what I've seen, I've only seen 2 games though, one of which was on the web) but to me, she looks fresher than she has in a while..She just seems to have more energy, and looks like she's having more fun that she has in a while. But this is just my opinion, and other people, who have seen her play in all the games, (live) could probably say better.

I love the improvement of ARob, I've liked her a lot since the LA game where she contained LL pretty well, and I'm glad she's improved a lot...also, I know she didn't play much, but I love Snell already...

The problem with Plenette is consistency. She puts up stellar numbers against Indiana, but the shooting went into the toilet against Connecticut.

The other issue...when the ball goes into Plenette, she is always looking to score. While it is good to be offensive-minded, she does not have the array of offensive moves to be taking shots every time she touches the ball.

I would like to see her diversify her game...specifically by adding some passing skills and learning how to pass to the open player out of double teams.
