Alone No More
Forgiving the past opened Sandora Irvin's future
BY Paul Kix
Let's take it back. Back before scouts whispered her name as a top five pick in this year's WNBA draft. Before she broke all those records at Texas Christian University. Before, even, that one game her junior year, where she considered giving it up, all of it, the basketball, the fame and college, just because she played poorly.
Back before she came to campus withdrawn, trusting no one, and back before she was a high school All-American. Yes, let's take it back to a Saturday night in the spring of Sandora Irvin's 14th year, to a neighborhood in Pompano Beach, Florida, called Ugly Man's Corner. |

In the AZ Republic 4/18/05. "And if you were on the fence--or about 100 miles from it--about attending a Mercury game, this would be the season to go, if for no other reason than to see what kind of wild outfit Michael Irvin, whose niece was drafted by the team Saturday, will be wearing at courtside.
Hey, whatever it takes to fill those seats at the "Purple Palace"....lol!!!!!!! |

Tim (Dallas): How was it growing up with an Uncle as a proffesonal athlete? Did it inspire you?
Sandora Irvin: Everybody in my family looks up to Michael, he's been our role model. No matter what the sport, football, baseball, basketball, we wanted to be like Uncle Mike. He is a real inspiration in my life, he attended lots of may games. He advises me on everything. He even tried to tell me how to post up. I don't listen to him, because how can a football player tell you how to post up? But really, he is a great inspiration to me and most recently he has told me that no matter what, to remember to come out and enjoy the game all the time. Also, he is now Sandora Irvin's Uncle, instead of my being Michael Irvin's niece! Ha-ha (Laughing). |
