Former Pistons star Bill Laimbeer is expected to replace Greg Williams as Detroit Shock coach next week when the team returns from a four-game trip.

A source close to the team said the decision was made this week.

The Shock fell to 0-8 with Thursday night's 70-67 loss at Phoenix. The team plays Saturday at Portland and Tuesday at Washington before hosting Orlando next Friday.

Laimbeer, 45, is expected to be coaching the team by next Friday. This is his first season as a special consultant with the team. Shock president Tom Wilson denied that a decision has been made to fire Williams and hire Laimbeer.

"Right now Greg Williams is still our coach," Wilson said Thursday. "Greg understands that we're looking for results. There has been no decision to make a coaching change."

Wilson said when Laimbeer was hired, "he made it very clear he did not want to coach the Shock. That's not to say that wouldn't change.

"It's a results business. We obviously hope to be a little better than we are."

Laimbeer could not be reached for comment.

Laimbeer played 13 seasons for the Pistons and helped them win back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and '90.

His current job includes assisting with marketing and being a sounding board for the coaching staff.

Last season was Williams' first as coach and player personnel director. The team finished 10-22.
