This past July, two months before beginning her junior year at St. Mary High School (Stockton, Calif.), Jacki Gemelos unwittingly but very happily gave UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma a verbal commitment to join his team in the fall of 2006.

"He said that I remind him of a combination of a quicker Diana Taurasi and a bigger Sue Bird," Jacki Gemelos said. "You can't get a better compliment than that, because they are two of the best girls basketball players ever."

She can shoot the three-pointer exceptionally well over opponents, but prefers to penetrate and slash to the basket. As well as she dribbles and shoots, she may pass even better.

Gemelos averaged 21.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.1 steals last season despite playing little more than half a game against many of the weaker local opponents on the St. Mary's schedule.

Gemelos said her father played college basketball at Weber State and played professionally overseas. His passion for the game became infectious.

How about the WNBA in 2010? - time will tell if she's all that. The WNBA is a huge step from college. Not many are able to make the transition when you think of the numbers that try compared to the numbers that make it. We'll watch her closely thru college & hope for the best.

One of the fun things about having season tickets to ASU is getting to look at potential WNBA players when other teams compete with ASU. This is the 1st time in many years that ASU has a veteran team. Only two freshmen & 1 is expected to be a wowser. This season will be exciting. Hopefully we will have surprises in the NCAA cause potential draft picks for next year looks slim :?
