I was thinking of the same thing, BBall... As for the US, it was a great game. I was glad that there wasn't a lot of slipping in the game this time. I was really impressed with Pee Wee today. She was just a terror from the floor, and I'm really glad that the 3-point shooting has started to pick up.
Next up... Russia! |

They are playing the medal rounds in a different gym, new floor, so no more slipping! |

I know... Now that gymnastics is over, they get to use the Olympic Indoor Hall. I wonder what material they were using for the other gym. Did you guys notice that the men were booed when they came in?
Did any of you follow the other basketball games today, like Spain vs. Brazil? That was a close one. I know that the Australia vs. New Zealand game is on the way. Also, Russia is really ready to face the U.S. Here's a quote from Ilona Korstin:
Quote: "We are going to play after tomorrow and we will see who will be stronger." |

I feel sorry for some of the men's players, Lebron, Emeka, Duncan, and a few others don't deserve to get booed....
I also like Iverson. I do, I haven't seen him play in the NBA, but from the USA games, he seems like he is trying to be a team player, and to hustle, and be a leader for his team.
It's so funny, as much as for the most part I've been disgusted with the men's players. When I heard they got booed, I get offended. Somebody said it best when they said. "The men's team may be spoiled brats, but the're our spoiled brats." To me the players we should be booing are the ones who declined invitations to go to Athens. |

True, we're the only ones who get to bash them.
I think this is the best thing to happen to the men's USA basketball, now we'll be able to field a team of players who want to go and have a selection process not based solely on how many jerseys they will sell.
Maybe they can model themselves after the USA women's program. |

BBallFan729, be careful of using the word "rooting" when referencing the Australian team. "Rooting" means something entirely different in Australian English.
Mb found this out when he visited their wonderful country. Knowing and loving mb as we do, I am sure he would have liked to "root" for the team, 8) however, he found it better to say he was "cheering" for them. Or in other words, he would have "rooted" for each one individually and privately, but cheered them on as a team.
As for the men's team....I don't think they deserve the treatment they have been given. First of all, I think their losses have caused them more pain and embarrassment than anything else could do. Second, everyone wants to blame the players (and they have their share of the blame) but nobody looks at the NBA's role in all of this. If the fans want to be angry with something, don't take it out on the players. Take it out on the ugly, terrible, monster the NBA has become. |

The big question is, are you a Kiwi BBallFan729?
Cause as an Australian of Greek decent, I love seeing any Greek female athlete/sporting team do well - hence my soft spot their basketball team. |

 Sorry, I didn't know about the word "rooting."
Definitely not a Kiwi. I'm Scottish, Irish, English, Welsh, and Native American. |

I think they have brought on a lot of the treatment by their arrogance. I myself have a love/hate relationship with this team, the entitlement attitude prior to the games starting digusted me. At times, I feel sorry for them and sometimes I'm ambivalent. Do I want them to win, yes, but wouldn't be overly disappointed if they didn't.
Yes the NBA and USA men's basketball are to blame for the team this year and I hope it could be revamped. I think the first step would be to only allow the men to play in one Olympics, then it might illustrate the honor that goes with representing your country.
I think Matt Hemmingway said it best, players who didn't come because of security concerns, just didn't want to come. What about the soldiers defending our freedom? They are sacrificing a lot so we can participate. |

Maniac - I agree with what you are saying about the arrogance, etc. However, when I made the statement that the players don't deserve the treatment they have been given, I was thinking of two things.
One, they are an Olympic team and I think all teams deserve respect. They may be there and most likely are there because that is where the NBA wants them to be, but at least they went.
Two...the NBA is to blame. Let me explain why I feel that way.
At least three key players on the men's team are barely home from their high school prom. And in high school, they were all "that". They were probably never really challenged. Most could take on the opposing 5 by themselves so teamwork was out of the question, unless you count the guy who may pass them the ball so they can do their thing.
We sit back and say, "The men's team is terrible. They have bad attitudes and don't play as a team. Everyone wants to play as an individual." etc. Well, the NBA does NOTHING to teach them how to play as a team. IMO, it isn't as much an attitude problem with the players as an ignorance problem. And that ignorance is extended to the things they say and sometimes do because it has become common place in the NBA to talk trash and belittle others. The NBA allows teenagers to come into a man's world, sign him to more money than most of us can dream about, and throw him onto the world stage and we all expect them to act, think, talk, feel, etc. like a man. Heck, the "rookie" Okafor has more "team" experience than half the dream team.
I think they are acting the way they think they are supposed to act. And I think they have been surprised at the reaction of the world because they haven't a clue as to what they have done wrong.
The NBA does it for the show and it might have a place there. I personally think the declining attendance in the NBA shows that it doesn't. But it definitely does not have a place in the world arena. Unfortunately, no one told these kids or taught them different. |

I saw David Stern in the crowd and maybe he's learning something about the world's reaction to this team and the overall perception of the NBA. Or he could be clueless and just scouting foreign talent to import, so as to continue to expand the NBA globally, and to increase the fundamental skill level in the NBA.
I know several coaches are frustrated by the teenage trend in the NBA. On draft day, one coach talked about the preference of taking foreign players because 1) its an honor to play in the league, not a right 2) because they are coachable and have basic fundamentals.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the NBA.
The best thing about the Olympics, is how well the WNBA has represented itself. Now if it can translate to fans in September, competing for sports dollars against baseball, football and the like. |
