This thread was actually started by cuane, aka Tinatracy on the other board. I was surprised :o she didn't start a thread here since this board seems to have better discussions. The credit for this one goes to her.

Sorry - but I didn't see that this was being addressed in the Washington thread. (This comment is an edited comment to the original).

I actually wanted this thread started so I could post my response to her thread on the other board. I apolozie in advance for the rant and rave, but not the idol worship.

"This is a great injustice. It demonstrates what I have felt for a very long time: This league has no respect for Grandmama. What a shame. This is demonstrated every game when players she defends or who defend her get away with things that she is called for. And the reasoning is that they are the "veteran player", when in reality they are the league's "high profile player" or someone on the league's "high profile team".

No one, and I mean, no one should have the advantage of breaking the rules of the game because of how much experience they have, who they are playing against, how tall they are, how much money they make, are the most popular player, etc. If a player fouls, they should be called. If another player fouls the same way, they should be called. I think you all know what I mean.

This also represents, to a large degree, one of the glaring problems with the WNBA: They do not know or under estimate a large portion of their fan base. It is the fan base that is dwindling away. It is a fan base that understands the game of basketball and loves to watch it in it's purest form (something that doesn't exist with the big boys). It is a fan base that likes to see sportsmanship and fairplay amid strong and fierce competition. WNBA management seems to think they can run this league like the NBA and they are losing people as a result. This is one of the reasons why, IMO, the college fan base hasn't embraced the WNBA the way the league has hoped. They promote many players that have no personality, demonstrate lack of emotional control and are poor sports, and have their game elevated by advantages given to them in the name of "experience" instead of playing like everyone else. They are also promoting, at times, a lot of glittering entertainment and lose the "game" in the process.

Jennifer has more personality, sportsmanship, and pure class in her little finger than most of the league's "profile players". She is a people magnet. I have seen her around kids and they swarm to her. She is who I want to be when or if I grow up. If the young girls I bring to the games turn out to be half the woman she is, they will be happy, productive, well liked, successful, feel good about themselves, help others to be better, etc.

Am I saying Jennifer is treated unfairly all the time? No; she does get a break every now and then. Am I saying there isn't a place for the "big boys" game? No: there is a strong fan base for the NBA. Am I saying that all the players the league promotes is undeserving or poor sports, void of personality, or out of control? No: but way too many are and it seems these are the ones that are stuck in our face all the time. I have watched WNBA TV games, the InSide Stuff, etc.; shows that have WNBA promotions and I have yet to see Lisa's (as in Princess Lisa) promo. What's up with that??!! You don't even want to get me started on that one!

Sorry about the rant and rave. You can tell I have been thinking about this for a while. You can tell I think highly of Jennifer. I think we are very fortunate to have a team full of women very much like her.

And she CAN defend!!!!"

All very well said SF48 :D

For me, this has been the most annoying/aggravating part of watching pro basketball (men or women's). Not only does it happen all the time, but the announcers talk about it as if it's SUPPOSED to happen that way. Why is that?

I have nothing to add to the above....just wanted to repeat the obvious :)

Geez, I would have started a thread here, but was afraid of the "new thread" police

Interesting stats, of the top 16 scorers in the league, Jenn is the ONLY one not named/voted to the team?!?!

There is still hope for our girl....a replacement for Ticha must be named, and since Sue Bird was voted in, move her to the point, make Katie Smith a starter and Name Jenn to the team. Last year rita Williams was named in the east to replace a post player, so it has precedence.

Come on Val, show us you do have a heart! Name the smartest sweetest player in the league (who also happens to be the 7th leading scorer) to the Western All Star team :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

The new thread police only stop by periodically ;)

I would really like to know who each of the Western Conference coaches voted for so I can be sure to sufficiently show my disdain for them when they come to AWA

Wow... when I wrote that bit the other day about Merc players' chances of making the game I had no idea that Jen was 7th on the scoring list.
That alone should have made her an automatic selection for the bench!
Let's face it, you don't get included in an all-star team for your defence, your assist-to-turnover ratio, or any of the other boring but important skills you might have.

It's all about scoring, and Jen is the 5th highest scorer in the western conference.
The top 4 western scorers are in the all-star team.
So is the 6th, the 7th, the 8th and the freakin' 9th!

WHERE'S #5??

There's an online poll at wnba.com asking If you could add a player to the West All-Star team, who would it be?. Arcain is currently leading Gillom 56% to 34%. Go forth and vote!

I asked Val the Jen question. She did not reply. Surprise!! I also asked her why she never responds to questions that might be seen as controversial, e.g., overt WNBA player bias (need I mention the object of their constant affection?), officiating problems, etc. No response. Surprise again!!!!
